Tier 1 Investor visas in more detail

To qualify for a Tier 1 Investor visa, you will need to show that you intend to invest at least £2million in the UK. These funds must be held in a regulated financial institution and wholly disposable in the UK.

You can use funds held either by yourself or by your spouse/partner (held jointly or in their name). If you’ve had the funds for less than 3 consecutive months before you apply, you will be required to show the source of the money.

Unlike many visa applications though, you won’t need to demonstrate English language ability.

Your investment should be made in UK government bonds, share capital or loan capital in active and trading UK registered companies – however, you cannot invest in companies whose main activity relates to property investment, management or development.

Extension applications

If you’re applying to extend your Tier 1 Investor visa, you must prove that you have invested the required level of funding in one of the specified ways.

You need to show that you have invested the required level of funds within 3 months and have maintained this throughout your stay.

Indefinite Leave to Remain

After 5 years in the category, you can qualify for Indefinite Leave to Remain – and you may even apply earlier depending on the size of investment made to the UK.
